Wax On, Wax Off

Waxing has earned its reputation for being an excruciating process. Who could forget the real-life scene in 40 Year Old Virgin where Steve Carell gets a chest wax for the first time? Audiences cringed as Steve let out a screech.

Thanks to modern techniques, waxing is a more tolerable process. According to Fiona Hilario of Lay Bare Waxing Salon, waxing is the best hair removal method because it makes the hair finer in the long run. Compared to other hair removal methods such as shaving and plucking, waxing lasts longer. “Regular customers get waxed every three to six weeks,” Fiona shares. For waxing virgins, she shares these tips:

1. Take a pain reliever 30 minutes to an hour before your waxing appointment to lessen the pain you’ll feel during and after the procedure.

2. Avoid waxing during your period (or even up to three days before your period) and when you’re pregnant because you are more sensitive to pain and bruising during that time.

3. Expect that waxing your underarm, arm, and leg areas is less painful than waxing delicate areas such as your bikini line.

4. We all have different skin types and pain tolerance, so waxing may be painful for some people, while totally comfortable for others.

5. When you do waxing on a regular basis, you will feel less pain as you did the first time.

6. If you’re about to go sleeveless or ready to hit the beach, get a wax one to two days before exposing those “bald” areas. You need give your waxed area breathing room and a least a day of recuperation, especially if your skin gets a little red and tender.

7. Inform the attendant if it’s your first time to get a wax. That way, she could guide you step-by-step and be gentler with the procedure.

8. Avoid wearing clothes that are tight on the waxed areas (for example, a sleeved shirt that is tight on the armpit). It may irritate your waxed skin and lead to rashes or ingrown hairs.

9. Don’t drink a lot of caffeine on the day of your appointment. It stimulates your nervous system, making your more prone to pain.

Whether you’re a waxing regular or a newbie, there’s no better time to get a wax than the hot, summer season. You’ll feel more at ease wearing that new sexy bikini knowing that you’re not prone to hairy peek-a-boos.

Have you used your Belle De Jour gift checks yet? There’s a free Brazilian wax coupon in there, courtesy of Lay Bare Salon. Try out their variety of waxing and professional threading services.

What makes Lay Bare different is that they use cold wax instead of the usual hot wax. Their patch technique is also different from the strip method that other waxing salons offer. Many customers find the cold patch method more comfortable because it cools the skin on contact and you become less wary of burns and irritations. Give it a try!

Color Your Look

Kanebo, one of the top makeup brands in Asia, recently launched their newest collection, Coffret D’Or. In French, Coffret means “small box” while D’Or means “of gold.” This signature line represents a woman’s childhood memories of opening a small treasure box full of wonderful treats.

Just like an unearthed treasure box, radiant colors fill each Coffret D’or product, which promises to enhance a woman’s natural features. Here are five key looks perfect for the Spring/Summer season, courtesy of Kanebo.

Sweet
The key to giving off a sweet but mature vibe is pink gradations. For your base, apply light pink shimmer on your eyelids. Blend in two more colors on the lower lid—a darker pink tone and earthy brown. Line your rims with natural eyeliner both on the upper and lower lash line. Curl your lashes and apply dark brown mascara. Keep your cheeks natural with a hint of pink blush, and apply apricot lipstick. You may add a shiny gloss on your lips for the finishing touch.

Fresh
A combination of marine colors creates a delicate and pure look. Channel sea nymphs by blending blue-green tones on your lids. Start with a light shade for your base, then blend in darker tones inwards for depth. To complement your vivid eyes, a combination of gold and orange on your lips will give you a fresh spring glow. To prevent the rest of your face from getting overwhelmed with color, keep your cheeks toned down with a hint of coral orange blush. Don’t forget to curl your lashes and apply two coats of black mascara.

Stylish
There’s nothing like silver to bring that fashionista sparkle. Since silver eyeshadow brings a lot of shine to your look, use it as base and then blend earth tones such as dark blue and brown to give your eyes depth. Black eyeliner and mascara will enhance your diva glare. Keep your lips and cheeks toned down, since your eyes will do the talking. Finish your look with natural lips shades such as apricot or baby pink and light beige cheek tints.

Cool
For a look that spells intelligence and sophistication, go for the gold. Start with a light beige base for your eyes, then blend in shades of brown, champagne, and gold. You may still use your black eyeliner, but keep your mascara dark brown or natural. For your lips, use a softly textured beige color topped with a gentle pink shine. Keep your cheeks natural with another beige hue.

Elegant
Get a dewy look with chic, purple eyeshadow. Combine two to three shades of shimmering purple or lilac on your eyes and two coats of black mascara on your lashes. For the temples of your cheeks, rose shades will give you the right flush. Use a pink or rose-colored lipstick topped with a subtle gloss for a glamorous finish.

Color Fever

See which spring makeup trends made it from the runway shows to the streets.

Loud Lips
Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta’s Spring ’08 runway models made a bold statement with lip shades in bright orange, pink, purple, blue and green. A very youthful trend, pop-y lips will suit any skin tone. If you’re going for this look, make sure you keep your cheeks and eye shadow natural, or skip them altogether.

To prevent your lip color from bleeding, apply lip liner before filling it in with lipstick. Choose lip hues in orange, red, pink, or mix and match as you please. Stay away from showgirl shades (green, purple and blue) unless you’re blending them with other scarlet or sunset hues to create one-of-a-kind bright lip colors.

Brick Lips
If you’re not into bright lips, invest in brick lipstick; it’s darker than the usual scarlet lips, but is just as classic. Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson and Catherine Zeta Jones are fans of this red carpet staple. For a romantic look, match it with earth tone eyeshadows. For a more dramatic impact, mix it with smoky eyes.

Like most strong lip shades, brick lipstick tends to smudge and bleed outside your lip line. Prevent this mishap by using a lip liner of a similar shade before filling it in with the lip color.

Pastel Eyes
A comeback spring trend, pastel eyes give off a fresh, feminine look. You don’t have to stick to all the pastel colors in your eyeshadow palette. Add dimension by blending in earth tones such as brown and forest green with baby pink or lilac. Finish your look by applying a pinch of peach or pink on your cheeks and neutral gloss on your lips.

Golden Goddess
If you haven’t hit the beach yet, you can always fake your tan. After washing up, apply a small amount of self-tanner on your face. Apply a thin later of concealer around your nose and eyes. Skip the foundation. Then sweep on your favorite bronzer on the areas where the sun hits your face—your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your chin, and forehead. Anything beyond that will make your face look oily, not sun-kissed.

Blue Wave
Reminiscent of the ’80s, blue makeup gives the face a retro twist. For nights out, sweep metallic blue on your lids and mix it with gunmetal, gray or black eyeshadow. For a daytime look, pastel and sky blue will do the trick. If you’re feeling funky, try blending royal blue eyeshadow with earth tones. For an exotic feel, don cat eyes with dark blue eyeliner or mascara. You can even bring the blue craze down to your nails with metallic or navy blue nail polish.
